Song of Solomon 4:8-14
8 Come with me from Lebanon, my spouse, with me from Lebanon: look from the top of Amana, from the top of Shenir and Hermon, from the lions' dens, from the mountains of the leopards. 9 Thou hast ravished my heart, my sister, my spouse; thou hast ravished my heart with one of thine eyes, with one chain of thy neck. 10 How fair is thy love, my sister, my spouse! how much better is thy love than wine! and the smell of thine ointments than all spices! 11 Thy lips, O my spouse, drop as the honeycomb: honey and milk are under thy tongue; and the smell of thy garments is like the smell of Lebanon. 12 A garden inclosed F13 is my sister, my spouse; a spring shut up, a fountain sealed. 13 Thy plants are an orchard of pomegranates, with pleasant fruits; camphire, F14 with spikenard, 14 Spikenard and saffron; calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense; myrrh and aloes, with all the chief spices:

Garden Wall

There is a small, sunken garden, about 1/4 mile from my office. It's one of those quiet little places that the owners of big buildings sometimes put out along the front or back or side of their "big building." Sometimes they create these little gardens because they wish to (thinking of the quality of life). Sometimes they do it because the City mandates it.
Either way; I'll take it. ~ View On Black (large, please).
In the colder months it is stark and bare. But by late spring, the trees, shrubs and vines that wrap around the garden fill in, and unless you know it's there - you would never know it's there. It's mainly shade trees, low shrubs, with some colorful flower beds spaced about.
The gray, cinder-block walls are covered with this Ivy. Interspersed every 15 feet or so are these wall lights. They glow upwards. There are granite and marble ledges on which to sit that form squares around individual trees. Small, rounded, ground lights sit at the edge of the squares. They come on at night and give off an irresistably romantic glow in the dark.
Mainly smokers use this garden. In Chicago, you can no longer smoke inside of offices and public places (what do I care; I never smoked anyway) so many smokers come outside - that nicotine fix is some kind of mutha', apparently - trying to find a place out of the wind and cold in winter, out of the heat and humidity in summer.
But there are others, like myself - some photogs, some artists. Or, it's the handful of people who remember the damn spaces are there once there are covered in green, and made some mental note over the winter to use the space come summer. Like I said, it's a bit of a secret garden. The regulars kinda' know each other by sight after awhile - although never by name. We smile, nod, but never speak. I guess peace, and quiet, and silence, and solitude...are the reason we are all there in the first place - nicht so?
And we give each other space. It's quite unspoken, this physical space, but quite well understood. It only gets broken, momentarily, by tourists and newbies. Slow turns of the head, cool glances, and shifts of the shoulders seem to send international messages.
I needed a wee bit of hotter, bolder color today - so I posted this one.

Stapeliopsis pillansii flower bud

The rare Stapeliad that flowers under ground.
As if Stapeliads weren't fascinating enough, Stapeliopsis pillansii (from the Eastern Cape, South Africa) raises the bar by flowering under the ground. The Stapeliad in this photo was pulled up out of the ground to expose the flower bud. The brown section of the plant was under the ground, and the green part was exposed to the sun. I have no idea what the pollinator could be.
